Helping young math stars shine bright.
Los Chispudos is a free, equal opportunity math tutoring program for exceptional students in Guatemala ages 11-12. Instruction is provided at the students’ school as a 2-hour, weeklong after-school program. Participants receive focused, individual tutoring in math from accomplished high school students, who are proficient in English and Spanish. In addition to developing students’ math skills, Los Chispudos aims to instill a deeper appreciation for learning in all participants.
Schools selected will receive the Los Chispudos Award, Q5,000 to be used for the betterment of their math department. The selection criteria are based on the school’s demonstrated commitment to equal opportunity and quality education that inspires students to reach their potential.
Teachers nominate students for the program. In the nomination, teachers are asked to communicate the reasons for recommending the student along with a brief assessment of the math areas where the student needs assistance. On the first day, participants will also take a short aptitude test to assess their math level and better tailor instruction. Students will then receive individual and small group instruction, as well as participate in creative games and math activities to make learning fun and keep students engaged.
